The dedicated and experienced instructors at the Eau Claire Music School are here to meet the needs of our students. Since our instructors are employees (not independent contractors), we can work to find the best match for your musical development and your schedule. We offer the widest range and lessons and lesson times in the Chippewa Valley.

NICK POSS
Owner

 

Nick Poss

Nick grew up in Eau Claire where he took full advantage of the city's vibrant music scene. He did his undergraduate work in music theory at UW-Eau Claire and earned a MA and PhD in ethnomusicology at Ohio State. After teaching in Ohio, Nick returned with his family to Wisconsin to become a director of music and liturgy at a church. The Posses jumped at the opportunity to take over the Eau Claire Music School when their friends, the Smets family, were ready to move on.

 

Education: Bachelor's Degree from UW - Eau Claire in Music Theory, MA and PhD in Ethnomusicology from Ohio State

 

Lessons: Piano, Old-Time Banjo, and Ukulele

JUSTIN ANDERSEN

Justin Andersen

Justin grew up in Eau Claire and attended the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis where he studied audio engineering, sound design, and audio for visual media. He has an internship at Pine Hollow, Eau Claire's flagship recording studio, and works independently with musicians as Twilight Sentinel Productions.

LAUREN ANDERSON

Lauren Anderson

Lauren Anderson can be heard playing both bass and guitar around her hometown of Eau Claire, but she is most well known as the lead singer/songwriter of Idle Empress. She has played with bands in diverse styles like folk, rock, and hip hop and has extensive experience working with young children.

PAUL BRANDT

Paul Brandt

Paul has played with Meridene, Adelyn Rose, The Gentle Guest, and University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Jazz ensembles where he studied jazz piano under Scott Currier.

COLIN CAREY

Colin Carey

Colin has played drum set for 12 years. In school, he studied classical percussion and played in multiple jazz ensembles. He currently plays in The Dust of Men, Rivers, and performs with the Chippewa Valley Symphony. His playing blends the dynamic touch of classical music with the rhythmic diversity of Jazz.

DAN COLBURN

Dan Colburn

Dan is multi-instrumentalist from Stillwater, MN whose main focus is teaching and playing jazz and contemporary music. Dan currently plays in UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I and leads the folk-rock band Boats and Bridges. He has also played with the River City Jazz Band, Sean Carey, and Ruben.

 

Education: Pursing a Bachelor's Degree at UW-Eau Claire in Music Liberal Arts

JOSH FREDERICK

Josh Frederick

Josh Frederick grew up in Milwaukee where he started playing guitar in 7th grade. Since then he has played in a variety of ensembles and studied a variety of styles, including rock, jazz, and blues. He has performed with bands like Softly Dear and Love Taxi and can currently plays with Idle Empress.

 

Education: Pursuing a degree in political science at UWEC

CHRIS HAYDEN

Chris Hayden

Chris Hayden is a native of Eau Claire who grew up playing electric and acoustic guitar, as well as electric bass. His experience includes studying jazz at UWEC and playing in diverse bands. Chris performs as Ned Brown in a singer-songwriter acoustic style incorporating traditional fingerstyle picking as well modern harmonic and rhythmic elements. In addition to music, Chris has studied bodywork therapy and movement arts, which he uses to help students improve their performance while preventing injury.

BORA HONG-EVANS

Bora Hong-Evans

Bora Hong graduated from the top female music school in Seoul, South Korea in 2008. Along with performing in various musicals, TV shows, and music festivals, Bora has taught saxophone and piano to students of all ages and experience levels. Since moving to the Chippewa Valley, she has worked many local musicians as well as playing in the Eau Claire Municipal Band.

 

Education: Bachelor's Degree from Dongduk Women’s University in Applied Music

JEFF JAWORSKI

Jeff Jaworski

Jeff is a practicing musician with over ten years of teaching and performing experience. As a solo classical guitar performer, he has collaborated with flute, bassoon, oboe, piano, guitar, and saxophone. His main interests are fundamental and classical guitar techniques, but he also has experience in popular styles and music theory making him a great fit for students wishing to learn any style.

 

Education: Bachelor's Degree from UW - Green Bay in Music Applied

DEIRDRE JENKINS

Deirdre Jenkins

Deirdre has worked as a session vocalist, recording artist, songwriter, and vocal instructor for the past 35 years. She has recorded and sung with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, and Cornelius Bumpus (of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers.) In addition to developing her own teaching method, Deirdre has experience as an instructor in a Waldorf school, which uses a holistic approach to developmentally appropriate learning. Her current musical project is a collaboration with Joe Maurer entitled, Squirrel Talk.

 

Lessons: Voice (jazz, folk, pop, etc.) and songwriting

 

Interests: Nature, local food, and cooking

 

 

JOEL JENSEN

Joel Jensen

Joel Jensen didn't pick up the accordion until later in life, but now he seldom puts it down. He  shares his knowledge and enthusiasm for the accordion through performing and teaching. Joel can be heard in the accordion duo "Squeeze This" and playing solo in the area's Bohemian halls (and everywhere else he goes). He has also been known to tour Eau Claire playing Christmas carols on the bus.

ERIC LEE

Eric Lee

Eric Lee grew up playing drums in Eau Claire, including the Memorial High School jazz band and the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps in La Crosse as well as many regional rock bands. Eric earned a BFA from UWEC and in addition to working as a visual artist, he operates Oliver Snare Drums where he builds handmade instruments. Eric has worked as a drum technician for Justin Vernon and Bon Iver and helped to set up the drums for Justin's April Base recording studio.

 

Education: BFA in Fine Arts - UWEC

SHANE LEONARD

Shane Leonard

Shane Leonard is a versatile multi-instrumentalist with extensive experience as a band leader (Kalispell), sideman (Field Report, Larry Campbell, Sara Watkins, et al.), and producer. His teaching experience is equally extensive and includes the Exploration School at Yale University and the Augusta Heritage Center. Growing up in Milwaukee, Shane studied jazz drumming and classical percussion. He later spent four years travelling through Appalachia learning traditional music on fiddle and banjo.

 

Lessons: Percussion, piano, voice, guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and dulcimer

 

TIM LITSCHER

Tim Litscher

Tim is the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist for the unconventional bluegrass band, Evergreen Grass Band. The band, which also features instructor, Greg Manning, has won Volume One's reader poll for best bluegrass for the past six years.  In addition to guitar and mandolin, Tim played piano and trumpet growing up in Eau Claire.

Interests: fishing, kayaking, and agate hunting

 

 

GREG MANNING

Greg Manning

Greg has extensive performance and teaching experience with all levels and styles of guitar, bass, and other plucked strings. He has played guitar for 20+ years, and has a background in songwriting, music theory, and performance technique. In addition to his solo work, Greg is currently recording and touring with the Evergreen Grass Band as an upright bassist and vocalist and with Irie Sol as lead guitarist.

 

Education: Bachelor's Degree from DePaul University in Music and Interlochen Arts Academy in Guitar Performance

ADAM NUSSBAUM

Adam Nussbaum

Adam has played the drums for 20 years. He plays jazz, funk, R&B, rock, and gospel in several groups in the Chippewa Valley, including Dames, the Shillelagh Lads, the Nick Foytik Band, and the Michael Rambo Project. He has also been a featured marimba soloist with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra.

 

Education: Bachelor's Degree from Indiana University in English and a Master's Degree from Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Theology

PAUL NUYDA

Paul Nuyda

Paul Grew is originally from Milwaukee where he studied piano at the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music. He performs both as a soloist and accompanist ranging in styles from sacred to rock. His is currently a composition major at UW-EC with an emphasis on piano where he has earned scholarships based on his juried performances.

ELIZABETH RANZENBERGER

Elizabeth Ranzenberger

Elizabeth teaches 3rd/4th grade in Hallie and in the past taught 1st/2nd grade and K-4 general music. She began teaching piano as a freshman in high school and found it to be one of her favorite things to do - blending her love of music with her love of teaching. She has participated in a local piano competitions, church bands, choir, and nursing home entertainment.

LEAH RICHARDSON

Leah Richardson

Leah is a recent graduate of UW-Eau Claire. She helped with arts administration for the Eaux Claires festival and currently works as an account assistant for Ambient Inks. Leah sings with the Master Singers choir and is active in local musical theater.

MIKAYLA ROLLING

Mikayla Rolling

Mikayla has been playing trumpet since 5th grade and is currently a Music Education major at UWEC studying trumpet with Robert Baca. She is originally from Waseca, MN where her high school band director inspired her to become director herself. Mikayla can be heard in a variety of UWEC ensembles, including the Wind Symphony, marching band, Jazz III.

KAYLA SHOEMAKER

Kayla Shoemaker

Kayla graduated from UWEC with a degree in piano performance and currently serves as the Director of Music for Faith Lutheran Mission Church. She began her musical career accompanying the choir as a student at Memorial. She continues to accompany multiple soloists, singers, and choirs in the area. Kayla also shares her talents by performing at local nursing care facilities.

VICTORIA SHOEMAKER

Victoria Shoemaker

Victoria grew up studying flute and piccolo. She went on to study bamboo flutes, native American style flutes, and other traditional flutes with Grammy nominated recording artist, Peter Phippen. In 2015, Victoria earned a degree in music education from the VanderCook College of Music. She maintains an active performing schedule with several bands and writes and records her own music.
