Eau Claire Music School Instructors


The dedicated and experienced instructors at the Eau Claire Music School are here to meet the needs of our students. Since our instructors are employees (not independent contractors), we can work to find the best match for your musical development and your schedule. We offer the widest range and lessons and lesson times in the Chippewa Valley.

Nick Poss

Nick grew up in Eau Claire where he took full advantage of the city's vibrant music scene. He did his undergraduate work in music theory at UW-Eau Claire and earned a MA and PhD in ethnomusicology at Ohio State. After teaching in Ohio, Nick returned with his family to Wisconsin to become a director of music and liturgy at a church. The Posses jumped at the opportunity to take over the Eau Claire Music School when their friends, the Smets family, were ready to move on.


Education: Bachelor's Degree from UW - Eau Claire in Music Theory, MA and PhD in Ethnomusicology from Ohio State

Shawn Smets

Shawn is a founder of the Eau Claire Music School. In addition to teaching lessons, he served for the first half-decade as the school's Program Director. Shawn is a fan of a wide variety of musical genres and plays over 20 instruments. He loves to get out and enjoy Eau Claire's incredible music scene.

Justin Andersen

Justin grew up in Eau Claire and attended the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis where he studied audio engineering, sound design, and audio for visual media. He has an internship at Pine Hollow, Eau Claire's flagship recording studio, and works independently with musicians as Twilight Sentinel Productions.

Paul Brandt

Paul has played with Meridene, Adelyn Rose, The Gentle Guest, and University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Jazz ensembles where he studied jazz piano under Scott Currier.

Colin Carey

Colin has played drum set for 12 years. In school, he studied classical percussion and played in multiple jazz ensembles. He currently plays in The Dust of Men, Rivers, and performs with the Chippewa Valley Symphony. His playing blends the dynamic touch of classical music with the rhythmic diversity of Jazz.

Jamie Christian

Jamie has been teaching children music for decades, including directing musicals and teaching classes and private lessons. She studied voice and piano at Union University, and piano at Black Hills State University in SD. Jamie has enjoyed performing in various church choirs and musicals since 1989.


Education: Pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Music with a vocal emphasis from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee

Interests: I love my husband and kids the most! Other interests include homeschooling, crochet, cooking, and literature.

Dan Colburn

Dan is multi-instrumentalist from Stillwater, MN whose main focus is teaching and playing jazz and contemporary music. Dan currently plays in UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I and leads the folk-rock band Boats and Bridges. He has also played with the River City Jazz Band, Sean Carey, and Ruben.

Bora Hong-Evans

Bora Hong graduated from the top female music school in Seoul, South Korea in 2008. Along with performing in various musicals, TV shows, and music festivals, Bora has taught saxophone and piano to students of all ages and experience levels. Since moving to the Chippewa Valley, she has worked many local musicians as well as playing in the Eau Claire Municipal Band.

Annie Jackson

Annie has performed since age seven in choirs, musicals, and church events, and she has played the piano since age ten. She has lead church youth choirs and directed musicals, as well. Currently, Annie is pursuing a degree in music education at UW-Eau Claire. Annie has enjoys working with students to achieve a new goals with each lesson.

Jeff Jaworski

Jeff is a practicing musician with over ten years of teaching and performing experience. As a solo classical guitar performer, he has collaborated with flute, bassoon, oboe, piano, guitar, and saxophone. His main interests are fundamental and classical guitar techniques, but he also has experience in popular styles and music theory making him a great fit for students wishing to learn any style.

Deirdre Jenkins

Deirdre has worked as a session vocalist, recording artist, songwriter, and vocal instructor for the past 35 years. She has recorded and sung with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, and Cornelius Bumpus (of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers.) In addition to developing her own teaching method, Deirdre has experience as an instructor in a Waldorf school, which uses a holistic approach to developmentally appropriate learning. Her current musical project is a collaboration with Joe Maurer entitled, wOrlds.


Lessons: Voice (jazz, folk, pop, etc.) and songwriting

Tim Litscher

Tim is the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist for the unconventional bluegrass band, Evergreen Grass Band. The band, which also features instructor, Greg Manning, has won Volume One's reader poll for best bluegrass for the past six years.  In addition to guitar and mandolin, Tim played piano and trumpet growing up in Eau Claire.

Greg Manning

Greg has extensive performance and teaching experience with all levels and styles of guitar, bass, and other plucked strings. He has played guitar for 20+ years, and has a background in songwriting, music theory, and performance technique. In addition to his solo work, Greg is currently recording and touring with the Evergreen Grass Band as an upright bassist and vocalist and with Irie Sol as lead guitarist.

Adam Nussbaum

Adam has played the drums for 20 years. He plays jazz, funk, R&B, rock, and gospel in several groups in the Chippewa Valley, including Dames, the Shillelagh Lads, the Nick Foytik Band, and the Michael Rambo Project. He has also been a featured marimba soloist with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra.


Education: Bachelor's Degree from Indiana University in English and a Master's Degree from Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Theology

Matthew Nyman

Matt Has been performing since he was in grade school--playing both piano and trumpet. In high school, he switched to choir and show choir and has gone on to study choral music education. He is a proud member of the university's Singing Statesmen and performs with the a cappella group, Fifth Element at UW-Eau Claire.

Elizabeth Ranzenberger

Elizabeth teaches 3rd/4th grade in Hallie and in the past taught 1st/2nd grade and K-4 general music. She began teaching piano as a freshman in high school and found it to be one of her favorite things to do - blending her love of music with her love of teaching. She has participated in a local piano competitions, church bands, choir, and nursing home entertainment.

Leah Richardson

Leah is a recent graduate of UW-Eau Claire. She helped with arts administration for the Eaux Claires festival and currently works as an account assistant for Ambient Inks. Leah sings with the Master Singers choir and is active in local musical theater.

Victoria Shoemaker

Victoria grew up studying flute and piccolo. She went on to study bamboo flutes, native American style flutes, and other traditional flutes with Grammy nominated recording artist, Peter Phippen. In 2015, Victoria earned a degree in music education from the VanderCook College of Music. She maintains an active performing schedule with several bands and writes and records her own music.

Quentin Volk

Quentin is a trumpet player/educator originally from Loveland, Colorado. For two years he has played lead trumpet in UWEC's top jazz band and last summer played trumpet with the Disney All-American College Band in California. Quentin is also active in the Twin Cities music scene.
